ADOPTIONS

  • When you find a furry friend that you would like to adopt and make part of your family, the first step is to fill out our adoption application for either a cat or a dog.
  • Once the application is approved (approval time may only takes a few minutes depending on circumstances), you can place a hold on the pet for an approved number of days or adopt the pet that day.
  • The adoption fee for your new family member is $95 for dogs. The price for kittens under the age of six months is $60.00. Cats over the age of six months are $45.00.  At the present time we are attempting to spay/neuter every animal before allowing him/her to go to their forever home.
  • DOGS: All of our dogs have been given at least their first distemper/parvo vaccine, bordetella vaccine, first worming and a micro-chip.
It is Michigan Law that all dogs over 4 months of age be rabies vaccinated and be licensed. Therefore, if you reside in Charlevoix County you must purchase a dog license the day of the adoption.  To adopt a puppy (6 months and under) it is now required that the approved adopter will sign up for obedience classes within 30 days of adoption.
  • CATS: All of our cats have been wormed at least once, have been given at least their first distemper vaccine, and have been tested for feline leukemia.
  • All adopters receive a coupon for a free bag of NutroMax food and an adoption starter kit filled with samples and coupons from companies.
  • Ask about our senior citizen policy on adopting a cat. :-)

GIVING UP YOUR PET

Please consider every available alternative to admitting your pet to a shelter before you schedule an appointment for admission. This might include re-homing your pet to a friend, neighbor or family member who is interested in having a pet, or if your pet has a behavioral issue, working through that problem with our staff or referred behaviorist. Our pets are our lifetime responsibility, and we must do all

that we can to ensure that they are happy, healthy and loved.

We will accept the surrender of owned cats and dogs by appointment only. To make an appointment, please call 231.582.6774.

We schedule appointments Monday through Friday between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Each appointment will last approximately 20 minutes. Please allow additional time if bringing multiple animals.

Please understand that we cannot accept every animal brought to our shelter immediately. We have limited resources and space so all owner surrendered animals must only come in when we have the open space.

When you bring your pets, please have:

  • All veterinary records
  • Your pet’s medications
  • Special food or treats that your pet needs
  • Your pet’s bed, toys, leash and other belongings from home
  • Your pet’s crate or carrier
  • Your surrender fee in cash, money order or check:
    • $75 - litters of puppies and kittens
    • $50 - adult pets
    • $35 - DISCOUNTED FEE IF YOUR ADULT PET IS SPAYED OR NEUTERED AND UP-TO-DATE ON HIS OR HER VACCINATIONS.

When you arrive:

  • A staff member will evaluate the temperament of your pet.
After we screen your pet, if we decide to admit him or her, we will collect your surrender fee.
